Christ the First Fruits
“Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
As I prayed with this passage, my mind was drawn to the image of first fruits, and from there to the Passover lamb. I thought also of the blood and water flowing from the temple, and from the side of Christ on the cross. All of these images seem to come together here. Jesus is both the Lamb of God and the first fruits of the victory over death.
There is a difference, though, that struck me. The Passover lamb is offered without awareness, led by another. But Jesus goes to the cross willingly. He knows what is to come—the suffering, the sacrifice—and yet He offers Himself freely. He is not only the victim, but the one who gives Himself in love.
St. Paul calls Him the first fruits. His resurrection is not an isolated event, but the beginning of something that extends to all of us. In Him, death is not the end. A new life has begun.
As I sat with this, I was reminded that this victory invites a response. In Adam, we inherit death. In Christ, we are offered life. The path we follow depends on whom we choose to follow.
Lord, help me to follow You faithfully, to trust in Your victory over death, and to walk in the life You have opened before me.
