“The one who came through water and blood.”
As I prayed with this passage, I was drawn to the phrase “the one who came through water and blood.” At first, I did not understand it. My thoughts went immediately to the water of baptism and the blood of the Eucharist. That connection felt familiar, but incomplete.
Sitting with the words longer, another image came to mind: the water and blood flowing from Jesus’ side on the cross. In that moment, baptism, Eucharist, and crucifixion seemed to converge. The water that gives new life and the blood that sustains it both flow from Christ Himself.
The passage tells us that the Spirit bears witness to all of this. The Spirit does not explain these mysteries away, but testifies to their truth and draws us into them. Faith is not simply believing a statement, but entering into the life Christ offers through these signs.
In prayer, I am invited to trust this witness and to live from the life given through water, blood, and Spirit.
Prayer: Lord, grant me the grace to persevere in the life You have given, receiving it humbly and living it faithfully each day.
