“I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness.”
As I prayed with this passage, two things stayed with me. First, John describes himself not as the Word, but as the voice. He points beyond himself. The voice prepares the way, but it is the Word who gives meaning and life.
The second thing I noticed is John’s words: “There is one standing among you whom you do not recognize.” John is telling them that the One they are waiting for is already there. Jesus is not only coming; He is present, standing in their midst, unnoticed.
This led me to reflect more deeply on what it means to be a voice. This voice does not create the Word—it reveals what is already present. In prayer, I hear an invitation to become more attentive, to recognize that Christ is already here, already at work, even when I do not see Him.
Prayer: Lord, help me to listen more closely and to recognize Your presence among us, here and now.
