Lectio Divina Reflection – Matthew 1:18–24

Jesus will be born of Mary, the betrothed of Joseph, a son of David.

As I prayed with this passage, I was unexpectedly reminded of my grandmother telling the story of Jesus’ birth. In her telling, Joseph always seemed very present, very real. That memory stayed with me as I read, and it helped me notice how little I usually think about Joseph.

Sitting with the text, I began to imagine the confusion and sorrow Joseph must have felt. The woman he loved was pregnant, and he did not know how this could be. Yet his response is not anger or vengeance. Instead, he chooses mercy and resolves to leave her quietly. Even before understanding God’s plan, Joseph acts justly.

When the angel explains, Joseph accepts Mary as his wife and Jesus as his son without hesitation. He does not ask for further proof or assurance. He simply trusts and obeys. In this moment, Joseph truly becomes a son of David—not through power or certainty, but through faithful obedience.

In prayer, I hear an invitation to trust God in the same way, even when I do not yet understand what lies ahead.

Prayer: Lord, give me the faith to trust You without hesitation, even when I do not know the outcome.
