“Take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt.”
As I prayed with this passage on the Feast of the Holy Family, I kept coming back to Joseph. When he is warned in a dream, he doesn’t hesitate. He gets up, takes Mary and the Child, and leaves. Tradition, noted by St. Thomas Aquinas, says this journey to Heliopolis may have taken nearly thirty days. That detail stayed with me. Joseph accepts the hardship without argument, trusting God and doing what needs to be done for his family.
Sitting with this, I started thinking about family life today. It often feels like love is harder to sustain, while responsibility is easier to pass along. Joseph doesn’t do that. He doesn’t delegate the safety or formation of his family. He carries it himself, step by step, into uncertainty.
This passage invites me to ask where I might be called to take more responsibility—to love in concrete ways, to act rather than delay, and to trust God even when I don’t know how things will turn out.
Prayer: Lord, help me to love with courage and trust You as Joseph did, especially when the road ahead is unclear.
