Rule of Saint Benedict - Prologue

Reading the Prologue, I’m struck by how little distance there is between God and us. Benedict doesn’t begin with commands or expectations, but with listening. God is already speaking, already inclined toward us, already attentive. The work, it seems, is not earning God’s favor but waking up to a love that has been there all along.
When Benedict invites us to “listen with the ear of the heart,” he’s not describing a technique so much as a posture. We call out, and slowly realize that God has already spoken first. The Prologue feels less like an entrance exam and more like an open door—an invitation into a relationship marked by trust, closeness, and a quiet, enduring hope.
