Grace for the Next Step

This may be one of the most comforting chapters in the Rule. Benedict knows that sometimes we are asked to do something that genuinely seems beyond our strength. He does not tell the monk to complain, rebel, or quietly resent the command. He tells him to explain his difficulty calmly and humbly—and then, if the decision remains, to trust God and try.

There are times when life itself gives us an obedience we would never have chosen. Illness, family responsibilities, loss, unexpected burdens, and circumstances we cannot change may all feel impossible. Benedict does not pretend they are easy. He simply asks us not to face them alone. Grace often does not remove the impossible thing; it gives us enough strength for the next step.
