Praying the Rosary: A Benedictine Approach

The Rosary is a prayer of quiet attention to Christ through the eyes of His Mother. Its repeated prayers create a steady rhythm that helps the mind become still and the heart remain focused on the mysteries of Jesus' life.

For a Benedictine, this way of praying is familiar. The Rule of St. Benedict begins with the invitation to listen with the ear of the heart. The Rosary helps us do exactly that. Like Lectio Divina, it allows us to remain with the Gospel, reflect on it, and let it lead us into prayer.

The goal is not to hurry through the words. The beads and repeated prayers give us a simple rhythm while we contemplate Christ—His birth, ministry, suffering, Resurrection, and glory.

How to Pray the Rosary

Begin with the Sign of the Cross.

On the crucifix, pray the Apostles' Creed.

On the first large bead, pray the Our Father.

On the next three beads, pray three Hail Marys, traditionally for faith, hope, and charity.

Pray the Glory Be.

Then begin the five decades.

For each decade:

  1. Announce the mystery.

  2. Pause briefly and reflect on the Gospel scene.

  3. Pray the Our Father on the large bead.

  4. Pray ten Hail Marys on the ten smaller beads while meditating on the mystery.

  5. Pray the Glory Be.

  6. Many Catholics also add the Fatima Prayer.

After the fifth decade, pray the Hail, Holy Queen and conclude with the Sign of the Cross.
