Responding to God with Love
In Chapter 5, St. Benedict speaks about obedience, not as blind submission, but as a loving and prompt response to God. For modern Christians and oblates, this chapter challenges the instinct to delay, negotiate, or resist when God’s will becomes inconvenient. Benedict describes obedience as something offered willingly and even joyfully, rooted in trust rather than fear. In daily life, this may look like accepting limits, listening carefully to others, or choosing faithfulness over personal preference. Chapter 5 reminds us that obedience is ultimately about love—about hearing the voice of Christ and responding without hesitation, even when that response requires letting go of our own plans.
